What do disability support workers do for people on the autism spectrum?
Disability support workers play a valuable role in providing services to those on the autism spectrum. Not only do they help individuals on the spectrum with basic needs such as shopping, meal preparation, and physical care, but they also play an essential role in developing skills that allow individuals to further explore their interests. In addition, support workers help those on the spectrum cultivate personal relationships and enhance their independence while navigating obstacles they face in daily life. Disability support workers may also be involved in leisure activities, skill-building exercises, emotional support, and structured interventions for those on the autism spectrum. Ultimately, the support provided by disability support workers helps empower those on the autism spectrum to live a fulfilling life filled with connection and persistence, despite whatever challenges they may face.
What services do you provide for people with autism?
We provide a range of services for people with Autism:
- Support in accessing and participating in community
- Support in daily activities such as shopping, cleaning and attending appointments
- Developing new skills including daily living, communication and social interaction
- Facilitating self advocacy and empowerment
- Attending social groups with the support worker to widen their support groups
- Supporting individuals with disabilities to access and maintain work or other vocational experience
